Resilient Livelihoods and Market Access for Smallholder Farmers in Malawi (RELMA)

番茄社区 the Project

This project aims to improve food security, resilience, and incomes of 11,000 smallholder farmers in Kasungu and Mzimba districts, with a strong focus on women (50%) and youth (30%). Implemented across 11 farmer associations and led by NASFAM, the project targets maize, soybean, and sunflower value chains through a combination of climate-resilient production, strengthened market systems, and institutional capacity building.

The intervention will promote Climate-Smart Agriculture by establishing a sustainable seed multiplication program for high-quality, climate-resilient soybean seeds, alongside training in conservation agriculture, soil fertility management, agroforestry, and efficient water use. It will also strengthen market access and value addition through upgrading sunflower oil processing infrastructure, promoting contract farming and out-grower schemes, improving storage and logistics, and establishing a revolving working capital fund. Institutional strengthening will support improved governance and financial management systems, enhanced leadership capacities, and gender mainstreaming through the Gender Action Learning System (GALS).
